What colors would you add to this windmill? (LOC) by The Library of Congress
This is one of more than 500,000 measured drawings in the Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey Collection that, along with photographs and written histories, document more than 38,000 historic structures and sites in the U.S. dating from Pre-Columbian times to the twentieth century (more about the collection).
Not only does the documentation support many types of research, but the drawings can inspire artistic renderings. If you’d like to apply your coloring skills to more Library of Congress illustrations, browse the black and white bookplates in the Bookplate Challenge album and drawings found in the Illustrated Newspaper Supplements. Historic American Engineering Record,
Beebe Windmill, Hildreath Lane & Ocean Avenue (moved several times), Bridgehampton, Suffolk County, NY. Documentation created in 1976.
Delineated by Chalmers G. Long, Jr.
Building/structure dates: 1820- 1821 (Initial Construction).
Significance: The Beebe Windmill was one of the first Long Island windmills to be equipped with a fly, regulators and cast iron gearing. It is also the only known surviving Long Island windmill to which these features are original. The ogee cap of the Beebe Windmill is the only instance of a decorative design in a Long Island windmill. All these features mark a departure from local millwriting tradition and make the Beebe the only surviving Long Island windmill which compares to English windmills of the same period.
